Did you walk to work today?
Today marks the first day of Walk to Work Week (11th-15th May), an initiative by Living Streets to get more people walking to work, and enjoying the physical and mental benefits of walking!
“88% of people surveyed last year saw an overall improvement in mood after going for a walk outside.”
We are proud to say that every member of the Greener Media team walks to work, every single day, come rain or shine (that’s when we are not cycling, of course!). Not only is it a great way to start the day for body and mind, but it also reduces congestion and saves on the carbon dioxide emissions.
“walking to work every day for a year would save 17kg of carbon dioxide, a 30 minute walk is the equivalent of producing one plastic bottle and a 50 minute walk could power a computer for 24 hours.”
“If everyone in England walked for just 20 minutes a day we would save 137,000 lives and save the economy billions of pounds.”
Living Streets Chief Executive Joe Irvine
So get walking! Rather than driving your car, taking the bus or the train to work, try putting one foot in front of the other. If your place of work is within walking distance, join thousands of others making a change this week. Who knows, you might love it so much that the habit sticks!
#WalkThisMay – National Walking Month
Walk to Work Week is part of a whole host of activities and initiatives throughout May for National Walking Month. Living Streets are using National Walking Month to highlight the mental and physical health benefits of walking, and want to see as many people as possible swap their wheels for two feet this month and beyond.
There is a joy in the simple, primal act of walking, and we are fully behind the initiative!
Why not put on your comfiest shoes tomorrow morning, step out into the fresh air and enjoy a brisk walk to the office. Find the greenest, quietest route you can – take in the trees, the birdsong, the sounds and smells and give a smile to your fellow walkers and you’ll arrive at the office refreshed and feeling happier and healthier. That’s got to be a good thing for all of us, right?
Sign up for Walk to Work Week here, and get your colleagues involved! Why not turn it into some healthy competition? You can even log in and find out how many calories you’ve burned or carbon you’ve saved. We’d love to hear how you got on. Tweet us your photos, calorie or carbon counts & funny walking stories @GreenerMediaUK using the hashtag #WalkThisMay.
